South Bend firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a fire to rip through a west side home early Wednesday morning.
It happened at 3:25 on Fisher Street near the corner of South Kaley Street. Firefighters say a plow truck driver noticed smoke coming from the two-story house and called 9-1-1.
When firefighters arrived they say the home was fully engulfed and they heard someone screaming. That person actually turned out to be a neighbor. Luckily no one was inside the home when the fire broke out.
Battalion Chief Nick Tekler says the snowy conditions made it difficult for firefighters to get out to the scene and put out the blaze.
"It slows us down obviously," he said. "You can only drive so fast and when you're pulling line it slows you down a little bit."
There's no word on a cause for the fire at this time.
