The University of Notre Dame says Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, will be the principal
speaker for their 168th Commencement Ceremony in May.
Cardinal Dolan is among the 115 cardinals who will be voting in the next few
weeks to choose Pope Benedict's successor. Some reports say he may also be a
contender to be the next pope.
"Over the past several years, I have had the honor and pleasure of getting
to know Cardinal Dolan," Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins said in a
release. "He is a man of great intelligence and personal warmth, and a
dedicated shepherd of the Church.
In 2011, Cardinal Dolan gave the inaugural lecture for the Notre Dame
Project on Human Dignity.
Cardinal Dolan has served as archbishop of New York since 2009. He'd previously served
seven years as archbishop of Milwaukee.
In 2010, Cardinal Dolan was elected president of the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops.
Notre Dame's Commencement is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on May 19 at Notre Dame
Stadium.
