Goshen High School is spreading the word to end the word. This campaign has students sign a banner pledging to end the use of the word "retard."
Throughout its three year campaign the banner has been growing in length. It started with a three foot banner and is now 12 feet long. Students learn about how the word affects someone with an intellectual disability. "This is just like to help people stop the " R" word. And to tell people how people that have disabilities it hurts them when you call them retarded and stuff like that," said student Brittany Richardson. And Mild Disabilities Teacher Jen Kalb said, "Over the last three years I've really seen a huge difference walking in the hallways. I don't hear the word as much as I used to three years ago. I do believe they understand it and they are really taking it to heart."
The goal for next year is to have other schools in the corporation sign the banner.
