The South Bend neighborhood where a plane crashed into a home Sunday afternoon is under mandatory evacuation.
The fire department says the evacuation order for more than 200 people on Iowa Street from Keller to Elwood is over concerns about jet fuel.
"The fuel is an issue. The leak has been stopped, but there's still fuel in the basement and that is one of our major concerns," said Assistant Chief John Corthier.
A shelter is set up at a fire hall on Sheridan. Only three people showed up Sunday evening and they didn't stay long. The shelter was empty by 9pm. We're told everyone is staying with family and friends or getting hotel rooms.
One man FOX 28 spoke to at the shelter says he lives two doors down from where the plane crashed. The impact shook his home and he says he ran outside and could smell gas and hear the hissing sound of gas escaping. It's been a scary day for him and his family.
"I was honestly in shock, it's surreal. You never think you're going to be in this situation I mean a plane crashing into a house. It's too close for comfort. Two doors down," says Andre Gunn who lives near the site of the plane crash.
Andre and his wife are staying at a hotel. They say they were allowed back into their homes before leaving to grab medications and anything else they may need, but they couldn't take their cars.
Police say residents on Iowa Street will not be returning to their homes until Monday morning at the earliest.
