If you need to get a new gun permit in LaPorte County, expect some changes in the process. The sheriff's office will no longer accept paper handgun permits, and will no longer handle the fingerprinting applicants.
Applications must be done online at on the Indiana State Police website. In order to get fingerprinted, you must contact Indiana's Electronic Fingerprinting Network (INKless) to set an appointment with MorphoTrust USA fingerprinting. Fingerprinting costs $9.95 per person. MorphoTrust USA will also collect all State permitting fees.
Once that is completed, applicants must contact their city police, or the Sheriff's Office if they live in an unincorporated area.
Permits are processed at the sheriff's office on Thursdays and Fridays from 8:00am to 3:30pm, or by appointement.
These changes come as part of new rules put in place by the Indiana State Police.
