Michiana Residents remember deadly 1965 tornadoes

Sunday folks in Michiana remembered the tornadoes that struck Elkhart County on Palm Sunday in 1965.  A remembrance event was held at the Elkhart County Historical Museum Sunday afternoon.
Pictures were shown of the devastation that killed over 60 people in Elkhart County.

Those in attendance shared their memories from that day.  Tony Hurst was 21 years old and working as an orderly at Elkhart General Hospital.  After the tornadoes he said the patients started pouring in.  "People's skin was embedded with sand and dirt cause of the force of the wind literally burying the grains of sand in their skin.  They had splinters in their bodies, they had glass shards," said Hurst.

Hurst said the tornadoes taught him to always be prepared.  He and his wife now always have emergency bags packed in case anything happens.  Something touched upon by the second half of Sunday's presentation.  Disaster relief efforts were talked about and the importance of being prepared in case devastation strikes the area again.
