Panel considers Indiana fenced deer hunting sites

Associated Press

Indiana legislators are considering an attempt to legalize several existing game preserves around the state where hunters pay for a chance to shoot deer that are kept inside high fences.

Owners of the preserves and some outdoorsmen organizations disagree on whether the hunting of the farm-raised deer is proper.

But Republican Rep. Matt Ubelhor of Bloomfield says legislation is needed to resolve a lawsuit dating to 2005 over whether four existing preserves can stay in business. Ubelhor says his proposal considered Monday by an Indiana House committee wouldn't allow any additional preserves to open.

Indiana Deer Hunters Association President Joe Bacon says the group opposes allowing the preserves because they don't provide real hunting.

The committee could vote next week on whether to support the proposal.
