City expected to keep pumps running at ethanol plant

Posted:

The South Bend Common Council met informally about the ethanol plant, Monday.

They have a public works committee meeting Tuesday where they are expected to put a six month contract in place to keep the pumps on.

Councilman Oliver Davis says that's the number 1 thing people want to know, 'How long will the pumps be on?'

City officials have said they asked the new owner and there has been no talk whatsoever of liquidation.  He says the two liquidation companies that own the facility are looking for an operator.

It looks like, for at least the next  six months, the city will spend $30 thousand a month, to keep the pumps running.

Davis says it's money well-spent.  "People are being affected.  Our own taxpayers, or own city.  People need  help and our city's there to help our residents.  I mean what's government for.? And so, therefore, it's worth investment for us to take the time to answer the calls of our neighborhood and that's what this whole project has been doing," says Davis.

Davis he's also pushing for a long-term plan in the event New Chem does liquidate.
