South Bend mosque holds blood drive

Local Muslims are trying to do their part to help others.

The Islamic Society of Michiana held a blood drive Friday organized by the South Bend Medical Foundation.

The drive was open to the public and held immediately after the Friday prayer service which over 250 people attend.

So many people showed up to donate that the bloodmobile was full to capacity..
Donors had to be shuttled to another location to give.

Members of the mosque say they want to be an active part of the community.

"We hope that people see that that's what Islam is all about, they see other things claiming to be Islam that we don't think are, and we want to present what we really believe Islam to be," says Gene Stowe a member of the mosque.

The leader of the mosque also known as the Imam remarked, "So giving blood as a donation, it is better than giving money and charity because it saves lives and saving lives according to the Qur'an, chapter 5, verse 32, is saving all mankind."

This was the first time the South Bend mosque has held a blood drive but they plan on making it an annual event.
