What can you do with your kids this spring break?

Spring break is here!  Many Michiana kids are now out of school for a week.  And even if you're not taking a vacation you probably still don't want your kids spending the time off on the couch.

"It's so important in their age group that they don't become sedentary and they don't sit and sit and sit," said Granger resident Marc Parker.  That's why Marc Parker brought his kids to the Kroc Center Friday.  His kids are off school now for spring break and they needed something to do that, "would allow them to socialize and exercise."

Parker said his family will be back next week since the kids will still be out of school.  The Kroc center is preparing for them and a lot of other kids.  "We always have extra events when we have no school days because we always see a lot of extra people in the building," said Sandy Sampson, the Athletics, Health, and Fitness Manager at the Kroc Center.

Monday through Friday the Kroc will be offering day camps for children.  They'll use the pool, rock climbing wall, outdoor turf, and the zone game room.  "Some parents have to work still, their day jobs, and they can't take spring break like the kids can so it's a nice safe place for the kids to have fun and stay active," said Sampson.

Others in Michiana understand parents need to get their kids out of the house.  Marlene Hollenkamp at Imagine That! said, "We're having activities to help, really to help the parents."  The toy store in Mishawaka will be holding open craft sessions Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.  "They can come in and chose a craft and we'll have an art teacher here to help them," said Hollenkamp.  There are numerous items children can chose to decorate during the craft session including, lamps, aprons, banks, butterfly nets, backpacks and more.  "so they're not just sitting at home," said Hollenkamp.

Elkhart Public Library will be celebrating Spring Break by having your kids make pinwheels.  "Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we're gonna be doing a make it and take it craft," said Allison McLean, the Head of Young People Services at the Library.

And on Thursday the Library will teach kids about the Civil War with hands on experiences.  "There's gonna be dividing up into camps in the north and south and learn about secret codes and make drums and eat johnny cakes," said McLean.

So even without leaving the area the kids can stay busy and the parents happy.  "It's wonderful," said Parker.
