Notre Dame Hockey loses in round one of the NCAA Tournament

The Notre Dame hockey team went into the NCAA bracket as a top seed, but in round one they were upset by a St. Cloud State team that had not played in the tournament in two years.

"It's tough to swallow right now," said Mike Johnson, Notre Dame Senior Goalie. "You know, I love this game, to be out there for the last time was pretty tough."

Despite the Irish having confidence coming from winning the CCHA tournament last week, the Huskies ended Notre Dame's season winning 5-1.

"I'm extremely proud of [the seniors] and their careers," said Irish Head Coach Jeff Jackson. "You know they are all going to graduate with a degree from Notre Dame. They were good citizens off the ice. They were, you know, great as far as coaching them on a day-to-day basis. All great kids with positive attitudes and they have all had their ups and downs and we had one senior that wasn't playing tonight but they all maintained a good attitude throughout their entire careers."

The first goal for St. Cloud State came midway through the first period when Ben Hanowski put the Huskies on the board with a rebound goal.

Just a few seconds later the Irish came right back with Anders Lee charging down the ice and putting the puck in the net. However, after looking at the replay the officials waved the goal off because Lee kicked in the puck. From that point Notre Dame struggled.

In the second half the Irish gave up three more goals. Joey Benik, Cory Thorson, and Jonny Brodzinski all scored for the Huskies and had Notre Dame facing an uphill battle trailing 4-0 going into the third period.

"It's difficult, it's hard to come back from a four game deficit, it's hard to come back from a one goal deficit," said junior center Anders Lee. "Especially this time of the year, and we didn't do it."

It was not until midway through the third period the Irish got on the scoreboard thanks to a Michael Voran short handed goal.

The Irish finished the season 25-13-3 overall and were the CCHA Tournament Champions.
