Diggins, Irish hope to make third straight Elite Eight

Posted:

Skylar Diggins and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish say they are ready to take on a 12th seeded Kansas team Sunday that's already pulled off two upsets in the NCAA Women's Tournament.

In order to beat the Jayhawks, who have already taken down Colorado and South Carolina, the Irish say they just have to keep playing the way they have all season.

"You have to trust your teammates. You know I am going to do the same thing I always do. Defensively I'm going to get up on the ball, get my hands on some passes, try and be physical," said Diggins, the Irish senior guard. "On offense I'm going to attack and put pressure on [Kansas] early."

After making the past two Final Fours, the ND women say it also comes down to playing with a sense of urgency this time of year. They believe they need to play like there backs are against the wall to beat Kansas in the Sweet Sixteen and advance into the Elite Eight.

"I think we have a huge sense of urgency," said ND junior guard Kayla McBride. "You know we have a lot of returning players who know what it takes to get there and I think we're mentally focused on taking it one game at a time. But there's still that sense of urgency that we want to get back to the final four and National Championship."

The sense of urgency is definitely there for the Notre Dame seniors too, who say they want one more chance at a National Title.

"I think that Kayla Turner and I understand this is our last go around in that sense," said Diggins. "I think that we're anxious to play every game."

The Irish tip-off Sunday against Kansas at 12:04 p.m. on ESPN.
