Police open fire on drug suspect, arrest him

South Bend police say they were forced to open fire on a suspect during a drug bust late Tuesday morning.

SBPD was conducting an undercover narcotics investigation near the corner of Western Ave. and Mayflower Rd.  They were trying to catch a suspect in a parking lot, when the man got into a car and tried to escape.

The man started ramming police vehicles.  He couldn't punch his way free, so he turned and started heading for some officers on foot.  Authorities say at least one officer shot at the vehicle.  The suspect threw the car in reverse and ended up breaking through a fence before coming to rest on top of a curb.

Police were able to take the suspect into custody after the crash.  Neither officer nor the suspect were injured in the incident.

Police have not released the nature of the drug investigation or what charges the suspect is facing.
