Street teams start their spring cleaning

Posted:

You're not the only one doing some spring cleaning these days.  Cities all over Michiana are sending their sweepers out to clean the streets after a long winter.

"We've actually been out sweeping off and on as the temperature would allow us for the last couple weeks now," says Larry Brown of the Goshen Street Department.

In Elkhart the street team says this is one of the most important times of the year.

"We have so much debris from the winter months, salt, sand, trash," says Bennie Shaw of the Elkhart Street Department.

They also have some advice for drivers.  "Be a little bit courteous with us, some of them give the guys a hard time," says Shaw.

Brown adds, "Just slow down, take it easy, we're just trying to make the city better for you."

In Goshen the sweepers won't just be cleaning the streets.  On April 15 they plan on picking up brush and leaves.

The Elkhart Mayor's office says the debris is recycled and sold as backfill.
