Memorial Hospital offers first ever online birthing classes

At Memorial Hospital, OB nurses say every expectant mother should take child birthing classes, but for some moms this isn't always possible. That's why they've launched their first ever online class.

"I have no idea. Whatever's out there, I'll probably watch all the videos," says Erica Warren, who is expecting her first baby in July.

She's on bed rest until then and isn't able to go to birthing classes, which is why Memorial's new online classes may come in handy. "It's important to learn all that stuff because if you're a first time mom and you don't know that stuff, you're going to be calling your doctor like every two seconds. "

It's mom's like Erica that nurse Susie Ferrill worries about. "My patients are anxious to do everything they can for this baby and they're limited to what they can do in bed."

Most of her patients are high risk, but she says they need the education as much as other moms. "A lot of my parents have read that they should go to classes, that they should be prepared for the delivery as well as for breast feeding, so we had to come up with a way to enable our patients to be able to do this."

Michelle Catanzarite is Memorial's prenatal education coordinator. She developed the online classes and while she says they're perfect for at risk parents, the classes can benefit anyone. "We also have a population of working moms, moms that needed a flexible schedule for classes."

She says there are videos and animations that walk patients through everything- from breathing techniques to labor positions and the education you get online is comparable to the typical classes. "It's pretty equal. If they are able to come, obviously they're gonna get the hands on connection, but if they're unable to then this is a great alternative."

And it's an alternative that Erica says she's taking advantage of. "If you watch the videos and stuff, you'll have some kind of knowledge of what's going on."

The class is up and running now. There's a free demo you can try and if you want to register for the online birthing class click here.
