Buttigieg takes on gun violence in South Bend with new commission

Last month at his State of the City address, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced the creation of his new anti-violence commission, and on Tuesday he met with city leaders to come up with a plan on how to stop gun violence.

The anti-violence commission is headed up by new Police Chief Ron Teachman and Pastor Eddie Miller. They met at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center on Linden Avenue Tuesday morning.

The commission was instructed to read the book Don't Shoot: One Man, A Street Fellowship, and the End of Violence in Inner-City America by David Kennedy.  The mayor says the book outlines a strategy with a proven track record of success.

Sub-groups have been set up with different objectives.  They will be meeting independently and then representatives from those subgroups with gather to discuss plans.
