SBFD recruits put through the paces in basic training

The South Bend Fire Department is welcoming its newest recruiting class. But before they become full-fledged firefighters they'll have to go through basic training.

The 21-week program began early Tuesday morning after a lengthy recruiting process. Nine recruits are being challenged both physically and mentally. They wake up early every morning for fitness exercises, followed by class for most of the day.

Assistant Fire Chief John Corthier, who oversees the training and recruiting processes says basic training is very important. He says the number one cause of death for firefighters is heart attack and basic training helps ensure that recruits will live long, healthy lives.

Recruits also got a special guest Tuesday morning. Mayor Pete Buttigieg stopped by to trot along with them during their daily two-and-a-half-mile run. Buttigieg is a fitness buff and plans on working out with the recruits one to two times a week.
