South Bend Schools Superintendent statement on threat

Posted:

The following is statement from South Bend Community Schools Superintendent Carole Schmidt on threats made against schools in Elkhart and Saint Joseph Counties:

We have learned that the Elkhart Police Department recently received an anonymous threat regarding violence at schools in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties. Although the threat indicated a specific date, April 15th, we are reminding students, staff, and parents of the security measures we have in place, and to confirm that our schools are on heightened alert for anything out of the ordinary.

We work very closely with the South Bend and St. Joseph County police and fire departments to prepare for many types of emergencies and regularly practice our safety procedures with students and staff through discussions and emergency exercises. While no amount of planning can guarantee that an emergency will not occur, we are doing everything we know to keep students and staff safe while at school.

Most importantly, we are attempting to promote a culture where everyone has a responsibility to be vigilant and focused on safety. We ask that you talk with your children about the importance of sharing any information that could be considered threatening to our community with a responsible adult. Anonymous reports can be made online or by text to each school's Tipline. Information about Tipline can be found at: https://www.edline.net/pages/SouthBendCSC/Students/Tip_LIne.

Although we are troubled to learn of this threat of violence, it also provides us with the opportunity to help our children understand and remind them that we do everything we can to keep them safe at school and home.
