South Bend citizens recognize Equal Pay Day

April 9th is equal pay day and a women's groups marked the occasion by wearing red on the steps of the St. Joe County Courthouse.

They say more needs to be done to close the persistent wage gap in the U-S.

April 9th marks the time in the New Year when the wages paid to American Women catch up to the wages paid to men from the previous year.

April Lidinsky, a Women's & Gender Studies Associate Professor at IUSB says, "So you think of all of those days that women have to work additionally and you can see that over the lifetime of a career, that puts women behind financially and their families behind financially as well."

Noel Spring says, "Women proportionately make less money and not only is that effecting women themselves, but it's effecting their families, their children."

According to the Census Bureau... in 2011 Full Time Working Women earned only 77-percent of the wages of year-round full time working men.
