Michiana groups getting grants to help at-risk students

Several organizations in our area will be getting grants from Indiana's 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.

The goal of the centers is to provide safe environments for students during non-school hours. The program must also actively involve adult family members.

According to a release from the State's Superintendent of Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz, more than 75 school corporations, nonprofits, and community organizations applied for the grants. 24 of those organizations received grants of $100,000 to $300,000 in grants. A total of $4.7 million dollars is being awarded.

In our area, the following organizations are receiving grants:

Boys & Girls Club of St. Joseph County - $175,000
Boys & Girls Club of Greater Goshen - $200,000
Michigan City Area Schools - $299,940
Starke County Youth Club - $226,000
