First intercollegiate Special Olympics Tournament hosted by Notre Dame

Posted:

Athletes were putting their skills to the test at Notre Dame Sunday.

People with intellectual disabilities and those without, competed on the same field.

The Special Olympics clubs at the University of Western Michigan, the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame played in a Unified soccer tournament, marking the first intercollegiate Special Olympics tournament.

Ted Glasnow, Co-President of Special Olympics Notre Dame, says, "We're really trying with this event to be a model for the rest of the country. We want teams and students from other schools. So this is the first step in a very long process but it's definitely coming together perfectly."

Those participating in the tournament enjoyed the opportunity to compete and be part of a team.

"It's more than soccer, it's just about the team, it's about the people you are playing with," says Mason Emes who represented Michigan.

Special Olympics Notre Dame hopes to be a model for the rest of the country and one day help create a national unified sports league.
