Elkhart police to have presence at schools for rest of week

Posted:

Police officers will continue to be present at Elkhart schools for the remainder of the week after keeping an eye out of for suspicious activity early Monday morning.

Authorities are taking precautions after a threat was made on a bathroom wall at a Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Elkhart County back in January. The graffiti promised harm to 20 kids from different schools in both counties. Word of the threat spread like wildfire thanks to social media.

Early Monday morning FOX 28 set up outside Pinewood Elementary School in Elkhart where everything appeared to be business as usual. An Elkhart police officer arrived on the scene at 6:15 a.m. and patrolled the parking lot on foot. FOX 28's Amir Abbas talked to parents at the school who say they're not concerned about bringing their kids, though plenty of our Facebook friends have told us that they are taking the threats seriously.

At a news conference Monday morning Elkhart police told FOX 28 they had presence at every school and would be making rounds the rest of the week, though they say the patrols will not be as heavy as they were Monday.

School officials say it's too early to tell how much attendance was affected by the threat. School City of Mishawaka, Penn-Harris-Madison and Elkhart Community School officials did tell FOX 28's Melanie Yuill on Friday that any student missing class Monday would receive an excused absence. FOX 28 also reached out to the South Bend Community School Corporation but did not receive a response.

FOX 28 will give you any additional information as it becomes available on air and online at FOX28.com
