Police say it's scam season

It's starting to get nice out and folks are eager to start on home improvement projects, but don't fall into a trap and get scammed.

Phil Trent with the South Bend Police Department says it's the time of year where outdoor scams skyrocket. "This is when it starts. Obviously people don't think about or want to have work done on their house in the winter time, they wait until the spring, they wait until the weather's nice. Especially now with people getting some tax money back, they'll use their tax refund money to do home improvement projects and that's when a lot of these scammers are going to knock on somebody's door. "

He says to always check up on businesses that want to do any kind of work for you and with Internet that's easier than ever to do. Unfortunately, he says there is very little that law enforcement can do if you are scammed.
