Memorial Hospital celebrates organ donors

The chance to save a life one organ at a time.

Memorial Hospital in South Bend celebrated donors and their families Wednesday morning. It's part of an initiative to raise awareness that organ donors literally save lives.

Those who have received an organ say its something they will never forget.

Double-Lung recipient Maria Knowlton says,  "I was very nearly, very close to death before my transplant, very sick, spent all my time sleeping, just taking care of my respiratory needs, so having the transplant, was just an extreme difference from going to very nearly dying, to being able to really live and to focus on things outside of myself and do things for the community and for my family that I was never able to do before."

Last year Memorial Hospital had the second highest number of donors in the state of Indiana.
