South Bend looks at ways to avoid future flooding

South Bend is discussing future plans after the Ethanol plant controversy.

In light of recent flooding issues in homes near the plant, Common Council members are taking a pro-active approach, trying to prevent flooding in the future in South Bend.

Four members have proposed a bill that would require soil and water table reviews for new homes and businesses. The council wants to educate the public about groundwater, so the flooding of basements can be avoided.

"Is something that will look at the wells for the current residents so they can have wells out there that can lower the water tables because their home values should not be tied to the success or failure of an ethanol plant," says board member, Oliver Davis.

The council will discuss the measure Monday.
