Indiana unemployment rate stays at 8.7%

Posted:

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state's unemployment rate stayed at 8.7% in March.

Indiana's rate remains above the national rate, which fell to 7.6% in March.

The Department of Workforce Development says the state saw an increase in the number of manufacturing jobs, production hours and durable goods production employment during the month, all of which they say may point to sustained growth and future expansion potential. At 19.7%, Indiana has the highest percentage of manufacturing jobs of any state.

The Department says Indiana's manufacturing job growth rate (14.9%) and number of jobs added (63,700) since July 2009 the second highest in the country behind Michigan.

There were some concerns in the report. It showed the state lost 11,000 private sector jobs over the last month, the bulk coming from Trade, Transportation and Utilities sector. The state says could be evidence of some uncertainty in the market and the recent unseasonable weather.
