Local volunteers help Central Ind. flooding victims

With severe flooding in Central Indiana, local volunteers are doing their part to help out.

The St. Joseph County American Red Cross sent cleaning kits to flooding victims today and plan to send volunteers to the area tomorrow.

In emergency situations, including this one, Red Cross chapters first make sure that everything locally is ok. Red Cross Officials then talk to Emergency Management Agencies in surrounding counties-- and if there aren't any expected needs in the area, then volunteers head to where they're needed.

Doug Farmwald from the St. Joseph chapter of the American Red Cross, says, "The willingness to help comes from, every volunteer, that's what drives them, is just to make a difference in other people's lives."

If you're interested in becoming a volunteer for the Red Cross, you will first be trained locally. You won't be able to volunteer on this trip, but there will always be more. Also, local American Red Cross chapters always accept monetary donations. To find out how to volunteer with St. Joseph County Red Cross or to make a donation, click here.
