Congressman Upton on new FDA OxyContin ruling

Congressman Fred Upton was in Berrien Springs Friday talking about OxyContin.

Upton met with local law enforcement and state and local officials about a new FDA ruling.

It will no longer allow generic versions of the original formulation of the painkiller OxyContin.

New opiod drug development applications will require certain formulations that reduce the potential for abuse.

Upton says it's important because more than 16-thousand Americans die from opiod overdose every year.

He hopes the new rule will save lives.

Republican Congressman Fred Upton said,"By requiring the same properties to be in the ingredients to prevent it from being snorted or injected should save a good number of lives."

Earlier in the day, Upton also met with other community leaders during a meeting of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police.
