Update: Te'o selected by Chargers in NFL Draft

Updated 4/26/2013 -- With the 38th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers selected ND Inside Linebacker Manti Te'o.

FOX28's Melanie Yuill was with Irish fans as the pick was made.  She'll have a full report on FOX28 News at 10.

The NFL Draft started Thursday and many eyes were on former Irish Star, Manti Te'o.

"The [NFL Draft] is the Christmas morning of the off-season. I love it," said Colts fan Justin VanArsdale.

Many Michiana sports fans say they could not wait for Thursday night to finally watch this year's NFL Draft.

Several fans wanted to see who would draft Te'o and a few said the skills the former Notre Dame star showed during college should translate well in the pros.

However, after day one of the draft, no team selected Te'o in the first round.

"I'm sure he'll be a great linebacker anywhere," said Brandon Tharp, a Patriots fan. "He'll be an asset to anyone."

Some fans brought up the girlfriend hoax, without being asked about it, saying while they think Te'o be great the whole situation could be a negative distraction going forward.

"You know other teams will be talking trash to him about what he's gone through," said Bears fan Rich Klahr.

There are also fans who believe Te'o won't pan out in the pros after a poor showing in the BCS National Title game.

"After that game and not doing anything what so ever to help out Notre Dame," said Kordell Morgan, a Broncos fan. "I don't see him being successful in the NFL whatsoever."

There is another Notre Dame prospect who all football fans have high hopes for too. Lots of fans believe tight-end Tyler Eifert, who was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals, is a future star in the NFL.

"He's the prototypical Rob Gronkowski-type," said VanArdale. " He's 6'6", he's fast, he'll be able to exploit linebackers and safeties over the middle. I think he's going to be great."

While Michiana sports fans cannot wait to see the former Irish stars turn pro, they are more excited because the draft is a big reminder that football season is right around the corner.

"It's just something to look forward to get you pumped up, because it's the hugest sport in this country really," said Klahr. "It's big."

The draft obviously is not a one day event and there still other Notre Dame players with hopes of getting picked up in the next few days. Players like Kapron Lewis-Moore, Zeke Motta, and Michiana Native Braxston Cave have a shot at being drafted in the coming rounds. FOX 28's Dean Huppert and Allison Hayes will have all your draft coverage.
