UPDATE: Mishawaka plans to demolish evacuated apartments

The city of Mishawaka is solidifying their plans to demolish an apartment complex that needed to be evacuated back in March.

On March 13, Mishawaka Code Enforcement and the St. Joseph County Health Department told residents of the Princess Apartments that they had to leave, after finding water leaking through the utility along with black mold and bugs.

The Board of Public Works voted Tuesday to beginning taking bids for demolition on May 21.  They are hoping the demolotion will take place in early June.  They are also planning a walkthrough for potential bidders to tour the apartments.  A date for the walkthrough has not been set yet, but will be before May 21.

Mayor Dave Wood says the city has set aside $200,000 for the project.   The city will have to fund the demolition up front, though they plan to place a lien on the property and hope to be repaid.

According to Mayor Wood, the Princess Apartments have been a nuisance for longer than just the past month.  He says code enforcement has come out for over 80 calls to the apartments in the past several years.
