Michigan City collects 69 guns with exchange program

Nearly 70 guns were turned over to the Michigan City Police over the weekend by residents who no longer wanted them.

The city's "Get More Buck for Your Bang" gun exchange program is designed to reduce the number of unwanted weapons in the Michigan City area.

Every year since 2007, the police department has offered Wal-Mart gift cards in exchange for unwanted guns.  "Our intentions are not to take guns away from citizens, yet our purpose is to give citizens an avenue to remove unwanted, broken, or unused firearms that no longer serve a purpose," said Michigan City Police Sgt. Chris Yagelski in a written statement.

During the drive on April 26 and 27, residents turned in 69 guns, including 40 handguns, 26 long guns, and 3 starter pistols.  One of the handguns dated back to 1925.  Since 2007, police have collected more than 450 weapons.
