Tips to protect your credit score

Whether you're hoping to buy a new home, a new car or even find a new job, you need to make sure your credit score is in good shape.

Companies use it for everything from deciding how big a deposit to require for a cell phone contract...To whether or not to hire you.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is offering some tips on how to keep your personal score in shape.

One of the most important tips-- always pay your bills on time.

The CFPB also says to not max out your credit cards - your score will be affected if you get too close to your credit limit. Experts recommend using no more than 10% to 30% of your available credit.

Don't apply for new lines of credit too often, but don't stop using your credit cards altogether. They can help you build a credit history.

Finally, be sure to monitor your credit - click here for one free copy of your credit report per year from each of the three major credit bureaus. If you find something that doesn't seem right, remember to file a dispute with the credit reporting company.
