Ritz says ISTEP+ results will be reviewed

Posted:

The Indiana superintendent of public instruction's opposition to how the ISTEP+ test is used isn't getting in the way of fixing the problems the test has had this week.  Glenda Ritz told FOX28 News the unexpected logoffs and other disconnects students experienced Monday and Tuesday were caused by a shortage of memory on the test providers system.

Tests continued through the week, but with only half as many students testing.  Ritz says testing will resume at full capacity next week, and half of all Indiana students are already done with testing.

An investigation into the impact of the failures has not begun.  Ritz says the first goal is to complete the testing process.  Only after that is completed will the Department of Education assess which tests are valid and how to prevent similar problems from coming again.

Ritz says it is crucially important to determine the validity of each test, because the ISTEP+ involves such high stakes.  Beyond student assessment, results impact school grades and teacher performance reviews as well.

Ritz openly opposes the high stakes of the ISTEP+, saying that it creates undo anxiety on students and staff at schools.
