Ryan Newman fuming after Talladega crash

Posted:

Talladega is known for wild finishes, but the end of Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race had big implications for South Bend's Ryan Newman and David Stremme.

David Ragan used a sweeping last-lap pass in overtime to pull a huge upset victory Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.
He got a push from teammate David Gilliland to slide past Carl Edwards to the front and he and Gilliland held on for a 1-2 finish for Front Row Motorsports.
It came at the end of a race that took seven hours to complete after rain stopped it for 3 hours, 36 minutes midway through the event. With darkness quickly closing in, contact between Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and J.J. Yeley triggered a frightening crash that sent Kurt Busch's car airborne and on top of Ryan Newman's car.
NASCAR sent the race into overtime for one attempt at a green-white-checkered finish, and the two Front Row drivers teamed up to steal the win.
Newman finished 32nd, while fellow South Bend native David Stremme finished 12th.  That's Stremme's best finish of the season.
Newman was even more pointed in his criticism after the race. "They can build safer race cars, they can build safer walls, but they can't get their heads out of their asses far enough to keep them on the race track, and that's pretty disappointing," Newman said. "I wanted to make sure I get that point across, and y'all can figure out who 'they' is."
