New grant puts Ox Bow Tower close to being rebuilt

The Elkhart County Parks Department is in striking distance of funding a new Ox Bow Tower thanks to a grant from the Elkhart County Community Foundation.

The Ox Bow Tower was destroyed by arson in July of 2010.  Though the arsonist was caught, the structure was a total loss.  The County is self-insured, and commissioners did not deem the tower a "necessary structure" so only limited funds were made available from rebuilding.

The parks department has spent three years trying to raise $180,000 to build a new tower near the site of the original.  The foundation will donate $32,000 to the cause, if the parks department can raise the last $32,000 they need in the next year.

Superintendent of Operation Ronda DeCaire is excited at the possibility.  "We can finally see the end of the fundraising and the beginning of construction."

The new tower will be the same height as the original, but will have three landings.  The first level of the tower will be wheelchair accessible.
