Airport fire training a sight to see

Posted:

If you saw smoke coming from the South Bend airport this morning you weren't the only one.

No need to be alarmed, it was actually training for aircraft rescue fire fighters.  It involves lighting a plane on fire to combat large fuel fires.

"It's an inferno," says aircraft rescue firefighter James Temple.  "We are doing it the hard way, really, because it's training and we need to do it that way.  And we're doing a 'hand-line' attack with just plain water most of the time, and it makes you work a lot harder."

During the training firefighters wear special uniforms that look like they were designed by NASA. The shiny suits can withstand extremely high temperatures.

"It's not actually made to go into, or be engulfed by, flames.  But you can get darn close to it and still be fairly comfortable inside the suit and still perform your job."

The annual training is a federal requirement for all airports.

Coming up on WFOX28 Morning Show Wednesday, Amir Abbas will be live at the airport during the 8 o'clock hour for an up-close look at the training.
