Shared bike lanes unveiled in South Bend

If you frequently bike in South Bend, you might notice some new markings along the road.  Mayor Pete Buttigieg dedicated the city's first "sharrows" on Colfax Avenue on Tuesday.

Sharrows are shared lane markings that help bicyclists understand where to position themselves in order to safely share the road with cars.  The markings also let drivers know that they are traveling on a designated bicycle route.

South Bend has over 60 miles of bicycle routes and has been a Bicycle Friendly Community since 2010.  "Bike friendliness is part of our economic strategy," said the mayor.  "And markings like these are a part of our bike friendliness strategy."

Mayor Buttigieg also proclaimed May as National Bike Month and next week as Michiana Bike to Work Week.
