Michiana students to bike and walk to school Wednesday

It's always good to keep an eye out for pedestrians when you're driving through a school zone, but on Wednesday that piece of advice will be even more important to follow.

Students across Michiana are going to be taking part in National Walk To School and Bike To School Day. According to the holiday's official website, more than 13-hundred schools nationwide registered to say they were taking part in the event.

One of those schools is St. Pius X Catholic School in Granger. A number of students are expected to take off from Knollwood Country Club early in the morning and ride their bikes to the school.

St. Joseph County Police will have traffic blocked off at all the intersections between the school and Knollwood. This is the fourth year St. Pius X students have biked to school.

Meanwhile in South Bend, primary centers will be holding "Walking School Buses" throughout the city. Basically, a walking school bus is a group of walking students accompanied by parents and school personnel to class.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigeig and Police Chief Ron Teachman will be out accompanying certain groups of kids as well.

"Chief Teachman and I want to emphasize the importance of daily exercise and encourage safe physical activity for South Bend's children," Mayor Buttigieg said in a press release. "Walking school buses support the community's physical and environmental health."
