South Bend Schools could switch to propane buses

The South Bend Community School Corporation is considering a change to propane-fueled buses.

Superintendent Dr. Carole Schmidt is scheduled to meet with Mayor Pete Buttigieg to discuss the matter on Wednesday morning at LaSalle Intermediate Center on Elwood Avenue.

Initially, the switch would be a big investment. Each propane-fueled bus would cost them a little more than $10-thousand dollars extra per bus. But some officials argue that cost might be worth it, because the school corporation would save an estimated $38,735 dollars for each vehicle over the 12-year life span of a school bus.

"The School Corporation would get a full return on the additional $10,300 investment in about two and a half years," said South Bend Municipal Energy Director Jon Burke in a press release.

Burke says propane burns cleaner than diesel fuel as well and would be 26 percent more energy efficient.
