Stamp out Hunger food drive helps get food bank through the summer

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana is cheering for letter carriers and their volunteers.  The 21st Annual Stamp out Hunger Food drive took place Saturday.

Thousands of pounds of food were brought to the food bank by postal workers, then it was all sorted by the volunteers.  The Food Bank said the need for food is high right now because this area has been slow to recover from the recession.  "We have a lot of first time clients who come to food pantries you know people who have exhausted other means for support and now they really need the help, they need to eat," said MariJo Martinec with the Food Bank.

She said they ran out of the food from their holiday time donations a long time ago.  They depend on this food drive to get them through the summer months.  The unofficial total collected from the Food Bank Saturday was 119,981 pounds of food.  They'll have final numbers on Monday.  If you weren't able to donate Saturday you still can.  You can take food to any Martin's or Kroeger in St. Joseph County on Sunday.
