6ft. deep sinkhole in Buchanan

Posted:

When crews in Buchanan went to patch up a pothole in the middle of the city's main intersection Monday, they got quite a surprise.

The small hole on the surface was hiding a six foot deep sinkhole that was seven feet wide. Road crews had to open up the hole completely in order to fill it in with a temporary filling agent made of sand and gravel.

According to the city manager the sink hole was caused by a problem with one of the city's sewer lines.

Police diverted traffic at the intersection of Red Bud Trail and Front St. Monday afternoon, while road crews fixed the problem. The roadway has since been reopened after just a few hours of work.

"It would've been a significant event in town had a vehicle hit it the right way. It would've damaged a car," said Buchanan City Manager Bill Marx. "We're happy that [a car accident] didn't happen. We're happy that we caught [the sink hole] before we had any significant damage."

The city expects to permanently patch the hole within the next few weeks.
