Local reaction to Angelina Jolie's medical choice

We wanted to know a little more about the B-R-C-A gene so we went to The Women's Retreat in Goshen.

There are two types of the gene, one and two.

They normally help to suppress cell growth.

If one of your BRCA genes is mutated there's a risk of cancer.

We're told women have three preventative options.

One is a double mastectomy or removing ovaries.

Another is screenings and the third is the preventive medicine known as Tamoxifen.

"I think the important thing to remember is its not zero," said The Women's Retreat's Executive Director Doctor Laura L. Morris. "Many women go into surgeries like that thinking I don't have to worry about it. And even when you read her statement available online. She says within her statement that I can now tell my kids that mommy will not get breast cancer. I mean you've reduced your risk dramatically but it doesn't mean you're not going to get it."

If you are thinking of having the genetic testing done, be prepared.

It does cost about $3,000.

Depending on your insurance, some of the cost may be covered.
