Movie at the Cove dedicated to WWII Veterans

The South Bend Silver Hawks and South Bend City Council will be joining together this summer for a special event to honor World War II veterans.

On June 6th at the Cove, there will be a screening of the movie Honor Flight, a documentary about raising money to take World War II veterans to visit the World War II memorial in Washington DC.

The movie will be played on the scoreboard after a Silver Hawks double header.

Admission is 5 dollars and all proceeds will go towards flying local vets to the memorial. The doors open at 6pm and the movie will start at 7. Prior to the movie, an air show featuring WWII planes will fly over the stadium-- a part of the movie screening unique to The Cove. There will also be WWII tanks at the stadium.

Councilman Derek Dieter brought the idea for the family event to the Silver Hawks to honor veterans. "What they did for our country, without it, we wouldn't be here, there's no doubt in my mind, we wouldn't be here doing this today, so we appreciate all the support," Dieter says.

Team manager of the South Bend Silver Hawks, Joe Hart says, "Obviously we're a baseball venue, but we want to be known for far more than just a baseball team here in South Bend, We want to be a great community partner."

Local World War II Veterans are asked to contact the South Bend City Council and the South Bend Silver Hawks at 235-9988.

The Honor Flight program started in 2005 and has helped over 90-thousand World War 2 veterans nationwide visit the memorial in Washington DC.
