Gas prices up in South Bend

"Gas price records in these areas aren't being quietly replaced, they're being blown out of the water."

That's how Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan describes the prices being paid for gas in parts of the Midwest.

GasBuddy says gas prices in the South Bend area average $3.87 a gallon, up 6.9 cents from last week. They're also 14.1 cents higher than we were paying at this time last year.

Both Indiana and Michigan are averaging $3.87 a gallon. Other parts of the Midwest, including Illinois, are paying more than $4.00 a gallon. Minneapolis-St. Paul has the highest average in the country, $4.31 a gallon, beating out places like Honolulu and Los Angeles. Tucson, Arizona is currently paying the lowest average of $3.17 a gallon.

"I don't believe I've ever seen such crazy trends in gasoline prices occur all at once- prices spiking in one area, falling in another, and holding steady in others. What we're seeing today is certainly rare," DeHaan said.
