Bid accepted for evacuated apartment demolition

Mishawaka is one step closer to demolishing the apartments that residents were force to evacuate back in March.

On March 13, Mishawaka Code Enforcement and the St. Joseph County Health Department told residents of the Princess Apartments that they had to leave, after finding water leaking through the utility along with black mold and bugs.

Bids opened Tuesday for the demolition of the apartments.  The city awarded the contract to Jackson Services out of Rochester.  The expected cost is $38,900.

Mayor Wood says the city will have to fund the demolition up front, though they plan to place a lien on the property and hope to be repaid by the apartment owners.

According to Mishawaka Building Commissioner Bo Hundt, the company must notify IDEM about the demolition. That should take about 10 days.

After that the company has 30 days to demolish the property.  Hundt expects it may happen during the week of June 3.
