Lt. Governor talks disaster preparedness during Elkhart visit

Indiana Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann is in the midst of her "Listen and Learn" tour that will eventually take her to all 92 counties in the state.

She visited Elkhart County Tuesday where she stopped by local farms and businesses to talk about concerns local residents have with state government.

We took the opportunity to ask her about disaster preparedness in light of the tragedy in Oklahoma.

Ellspermann says the Indiana Department of Homeland Security conducts quarterly drills to make sure personnel are prepared in the case of weather and other types of emergencies.

"That includes testing of our centers out of Indianapolis and our local agencies to simulate those kinds of things," she said.  "But we're ready if Oklahoma requests our help, we're ready to go their aide."

Ellspermann is from Dubois County.  The Lt. Governor says she is committed to becoming familiar with the issues in every county in the state.
