A St. Joseph County inmate is back in custody after attempting to escape at the courthouse.  Police say Timothy Patterson was being transported to the courthouse for a scheduled appearance around 8:40am on Wednesday when he attempted to escape the Transportation Deputies escorting him.

St. Joseph County Police say transported inmates usually have waist chains and ankle shackles.  Patterson had an ankle injury, though, and was not shackled at the ankles.

Patterson ran up from the lower level of the courthouse and through an emergency exit.  Officers chased after him.  They caught up with the escapee in a parking garage at the corner of Main and Wayne Streets.  The entire chase took only a few minutes.

Patterson had been charged with Domestic Battery and Felony OWI.  He now faces the possibility of additional charges from the escape attempt.
