EPA wants LaSalle Park on national priority list

The Environmental Protection Agency wants to put a site overlapping LaSalle Park to be put on the National Priority List.

That's the first step toward being in the agency's Superfund environmental cleanup program.

In response, Mayor Pete Buttigeg, sent the E.P.A. a letter asking them to clarify what this means.

They haven't been told to restrict access to the park but they also want to know if it's safe.

"I'm concerned about the news from the EPA and think it's very important that they come out here and have a public session where they can explain what this means," says South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The mayor says the EPA hasn't advised them to limit access to the park, recreation center, or nearby homes.

They also haven't raised any concerns relating to drinking water.

The agency did cite concerns about soil in the area.
