Commission postpones decision on Elkhart Armory restoration

Posted:

The two companies looking to buy the heavily damaged Elkhart Armory building will have another month to prepare their plans for restoration.  The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission is deciding whether to sell the property, or simply demolish the historic structure.

The companies submitted plans earlier this month to restore the aging building that partially collapsed this past winter.  However, according to the redevelopment commission, the plans weren't strong enough to approve.  In an effort to save the building, they are giving the companies another 30 days to solidify their plans.

That may not be enough time, says one of the potential buyers, Daniel Cripe.  He told FOX28 News that it is difficult to assess the amount of damage and exactly what needs to be done because the amount of debris still inside the building.

To compound the problems, his company plans on renting the building out to another tenant.  Any tenant they find may want specific changes to the interior that can't yet be included in restoration plans.

Demolition of the 128-year-old building is still an option.  That could cost the city up to $273,000 to perform.
