Streets renamed in South Bend in anticipation for parade

In preparation for the 90th South Bend West Side Memorial Day Parade, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has renamed the junction of Ford and Lombardy Streets to Memorial Day Drive.

The annual parade will take place at 8:15 am on Monday and will draw over 5,000 spectators.

With 110 entries, including all four public high school's bands, the parade is one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the state.

The parade holds special meaning for South Bend west side native Don Walkowiak. A Korean War veteran, Walkowiak has been involved in the parade since 1983.

He says the residents of the west side go out of their way to wash their windows and cut their grass in preparation for the parade.

Walkowiak calls it an honor and privilege to be recognized by the community for his service.

The Achievement Forum of South Bend will honor him as the Vet-of-the-Day during the parade on Monday.
